3hr Adventure Paddle Gold Coast

  • Schuster Park, Tallebudgera QLD 4228 Gold Coast Australia (map)

Have a sense of adventure and love to get out on the water? The 3hr Adventure Kayak – Gold Coast – is a fun and challenging morning out for everyone from newbies or families to strong kayakers.

It’s a team based challenge to collect as many check points as you can in 3 hours with the winning team the first ones to cross the finish line with the most check points collected.

The course is only revealed at race registration, 1 hour before the race start and you can expect to kayak anywhere between 5 and 35kms depending on the number of check points you want to collect and how fast you can paddle.

Best of all, you don’t have to be a pro kayaker to have fun! The event is designed for everyone. Depending on the category, kayaks are included or if you really want to go for it, bring your own kayak!

There are three main categories depending on your choice of paddle craft:

  1. Sit-On-Top Double Kayaks (Supplied)

  2. BYO Kayak or Ski (single or double acceptable)

  3. Stand Up Paddle boards

HOW DOES AN ADVENTURE PADDLE WORK?

At race registration, teams receive a map with a series of check points marked on it and a set of descriptions. They then need to plan their route factoring in how far they believe they can paddle in 3 hours.

The 3hr Adventure Paddle uses the the standard orienteering flags and punches and control cards. Teams in the BYO paddle craft category will receive two control cards to ensure both members visit all check points. At Race registration teams will receive two waterproof maps of the local area with a series of check points (circles) marked on them, along with a set of check point descriptions e.g. ‘Small tree, southern bank’.

Teams need to plan their route carefully factoring in how far they want to paddle, how many check points they want to collect and the tide and weather conditions on the day.

At 9am the race starts and team start their paddle. When they reach a check point, they need to punch the control card to record they’ve been at that check point.

Check points are easy to find - they are small orange and white orienteering flags and are not hidden.

Once a team has collected as many check points as they can, they need to head to the finish line before the 3 hour cut-off. Points will be deducted if teams are late.

The winning team is the first one to cross the finish line with the most check points collected.

Most of all, it’s all about getting out there and having fun!
